Dear Daily Newspaper, People are fined daily for using mobile phones while driving, or doing any number of things which may affect their ability to drive safely on the road, such as putting on make-up, eating, doing your hair, shaving. And rightly so. Why then does our law accept that a person may smoke and drive? No offence intended to smokers, however the law is definitely not fair and equitable in this instance, adn should not be allowed to continue without change. A driver may not answer his mobile phone or eat an apple, but he may juggle his pack of smokes to get one out, fiddle with his car-lighter, gas-lighter, or matches (with open flame), whilst juggling the steering wheel, gear stick etc. plus then holding a cigarette with live ash. Many smokers will admit to having dropped their cigarette while driving, and the danger that it poses while trying to retrieve it is a threat to motorists and pedestrians within the vicinity. Law states that a driver must not use anything which is not related to the act of driving the vehicle. People are being charged for doing something like eating an apple. Why on earth are we continuing to allow people to smoke and drive? Tracey If you would like to submit your opinion to Daily Newspaper please submit here.
